Écrivain et imprimeur judéo-allemand de Philadelphie, né à Ponievieji, gouvernement de Kovno, en Russie, le 28 août 1855. En 1868, il se rend à Vilkomir pour étudier sous la direction de Moses Loeb Lilienblum ; impliqué en 1877 dans le mouvement nihiliste, il est arrêté à Kiev, s'échappe à Czernowitz, en Autriche, et publie son premier livre, « Ha-Nevel » (La Harpe), recueil de poèmes hébreux et judéo-allemands, en 1882. Émigré aux États-Unis en 1888, il rejoint le mouvement anarchiste new-yorkais et devient un collaborateur prolifique de la presse judéo-allemande ; en 1895, il dirige l'éphémère hebdomadaire « Die Gegenwart ».
