Théologien chrétien français converti au judaïsme, né de parents catholiques en 1602 ou 1603 à Briey, en Lorraine, mort sur le bûcher à Genève le 20 avril 1632. Formé chez les jésuites, il se détache du catholicisme puis du protestantisme, se convainquant que seul l'Ancien Testament contient la vérité. Le rabbinat de Metz refuse de le recevoir, par crainte de représailles ; à Venise puis à Padoue, les Juifs, tolérés pour raisons commerciales et parqués dans un ghetto, ne peuvent guère l'aider davantage. De retour à Genève, il devient pasteur protestant à Divonne tout en dissimulant ses convictions réelles.
