Roi de Syrie, dit « l'Illustre », il règne à partir de 175 av. J.-C. et meurt en 164. Fils d'Antiochus le Grand, il s'empare du trône après le meurtre de son frère Séleucos, au détriment de son neveu Démétrios, l'héritier légitime ; les sources rabbiniques le nomment « le Méchant ». Vaniteux et prodigue, il avait appris à Rome à séduire le petit peuple tout en nourrissant, au fond, un mépris tyrannique pour ses semblables ; loin d'helléniser ses sujets par conviction, il cherchait à les dénationaliser. C'est le conflit entre les Tobiades et le grand prêtre Onias III qui lui fournit l'occasion de s'immiscer dans les affaires juives.
