Roi de Syrie, né vers 242 av. J.-C., régnant à partir de 223, mort en 187. Vers 218, il envahit la Palestine, revendiquée comme partie de son domaine séleucide, s'emparant de nombreuses places fortes ; en 198, après avoir vaincu le général égyptien Scopas à Panéas, dans le nord de la Palestine, les portes de Jérusalem s'ouvrent à lui. Entre son entrée en Palestine, en 218, et l'incorporation formelle du pays à l'empire séleucide, en 198, la Judée, dit Josèphe, fut comme un navire ballotté par la tempête. Sa défaite face aux Romains à Magnésie, en 190, affaiblit considérablement sa puissance.
