Dernier roi hasmonéen de Judée, mort en 37 av. J.-C. Second fils d'Aristobule II, il est emmené prisonnier à Rome par Pompée avec son père en 63 av. J.-C., et s'en échappe en 57 pour revenir en Palestine. À la mort de son frère aîné Alexandre, il se considère seul héritier des Hasmonéens et cherche d'abord l'appui de Rome, rencontrant Jules César en Syrie en 47 — sans succès. Il se tourne alors vers les adversaires de Rome et tente en 42, avec son beau-frère Ptolémée Mennei, de s'emparer du pouvoir en Palestine, avant d'y parvenir deux ans plus tard, profitant de l'invasion parthe de la Syrie en l'an 40.
