Born in Collegara (Modena) on June 21, 1878, youngest of an ancient and wealthy Modenese Jewish family (name derived from the town of Formigine, attested since 1629). He founded his publishing house in 1908 (approximately 600 titles), created celebrated collections ("Profili", "I Classici del ridere"), the journal "L'Italia che scrive" (1918) and the biographical dictionary "Chi è?". Struck by the racial laws of 1938, he threw himself on November 29, 1938 from the Ghirlandina tower of the Modena Cathedral to denounce the infamy of these laws.
