Ethnographe et géographe allemand, né en 1835 à Brunswick, directeur de la revue « Globus » depuis 1890. Il publie en 1881 le « Zur Volkskunde der Juden », avec une carte de répartition des Juifs en Europe centrale — première tentative scientifique, quoique empreinte d'un parti pris antijuif, de décrire les Juifs comme race, ainsi que leurs coutumes et leur folklore. Ses deux séries d'« Ethnographische Parallelen » (Stuttgart, 1878, 1889) rapprochent plusieurs usages juifs d'autres traditions, tandis que ses « Flutsagen » (Brunswick, 1891) rassemblent les légendes du déluge chez les peuples primitifs.
