Born in Marseille to a Sephardic Jewish merchant family whose paternal branch had been established in Livorno for over a century. From 1912 onward, he was one of four "pillars" of the Nouvelle Revue Française alongside Gide, Claudel, and Valéry. His major work, the Voyage du Condottière, was born from his travels in Italy. A declared opponent of Nazism, he had to flee Paris in 1940.
