Born in Nancy in a Lorraine Jewish family, former member of the Council of State and Dreyfusard. Pioneer of free verse in France and theorist of poetics. In 1908 he published « Poèmes juifs », the first major assumed Jewish voice in French poetry, and participated in 1919 in the Peace Conference as a Jewish delegate.
