Born in Constantine in a Jewish family of Algeria, stripped of French nationality in 1940 by Vichy, he joined the Free French in 1942. Agrégé in history, he teaches at the University of Tunis and later becomes professor at the University of Nice, specialist in colonial Algeria and the contemporary Maghreb/Middle East; he supervised numerous dissertations (including that of Gilbert Meynier).
