Historien de la littérature italienne et philologue, né à Pise le 20 février 1835. Remarqué jeune pour son talent littéraire et son engagement libéral, il rejoint en 1855 Turin, officiellement pour étudier le droit, en réalité comme agent secret entre les libéraux de Toscane et de Piémont et le comte Cavour. Représentant de la Toscane à la Société nationale, il est chargé de prononcer le discours lors de l'offrande à Cavour de son buste sculpté par Vela. À la chute du gouvernement de Léopold II de Toscane, le 27 avril 1859, il rentre à Florence, avant de recevoir, après le traité de Villafranca, la direction du journal libéral « La Nazione ».
