Né Werner Falk à Cologne en 1929 dans une famille juive, il fuit l'Allemagne nazie et s'établit en Palestine en 1938, où la famille adopte le nom Etzioni (pseudonyme qu'Amitai employait dès ses écrits d'adolescence à Ben Shemen). Sociologue israélo-américain de premier plan, il a fondé le Communitarian Network et forgé la notion moderne de communautarisme. Il a étudié auprès de Martin Buber, Gershom Scholem et des Leibowitz à Jérusalem.
