Born Werner Falk in Cologne in 1929 in a Jewish family, he fled Nazi Germany and settled in Palestine in 1938, where the family adopted the name Etzioni (a pseudonym Amitai used from his teenage writings at Ben Shemen). A leading Israeli-American sociologist, he founded the Communitarian Network and forged the modern notion of communitarianism. He studied under Martin Buber, Gershom Scholem and the Leibowitz brothers in Jerusalem.
