L'un des plus grands médecins du XVIe siècle, issu d'une famille marrane nommée Chabib (= « Habib », traduit en latin par Amatus, « aimé »). Formé à Salamanque, il exerça à Anvers, Ferrare et Ancône avant de finir sa vie à Salonique où il revint ouvertement au judaïsme. On lui attribue des observations pionnières sur les valvules et la circulation du sang.
