Historien et archéologue espagnol, spécialiste des Juifs d'Espagne et du Portugal, né en 1818, mort à Séville en 1878. Inspecteur général de l'instruction publique en Espagne, il publie à Madrid, en 1848, ses « Estudios Históricos, Políticos, y Literarios sobre los Judíos de España », traduits en français à Paris en 1861, puis développés en une œuvre plus vaste en trois volumes, la « Historia Social, Política, y Religiosa de los Judíos de España y Portugal » (Madrid, 1875-76). Ignorant l'hébreu et les sources juives, il s'appuie, pour la partie littéraire de son premier ouvrage, sur les notes peu critiques de De Castro.
