Cabaliste et poète liturgique né à Safed, actif dans la première moitié du XVIe siècle, contemporain de Joseph Caro et maître, ainsi que beau-frère, de Moïse Cordovero. Disciple de Joseph Taytatzak, il émigre de Turquie — où il avait vécu à Salonique et à Andrinople — vers Safed, en haute Galilée, devenue la Mecque des mystiques juifs. La date de sa mort est inconnue, mais il était encore vivant en 1561, année de son commentaire sur le livre de Ruth. Sa notoriété repose surtout sur son poème liturgique pour l'accueil du sabbat, « Lekha Dodi », entré dans les rituels tant séfarade qu'ashkénaze et jugé par R. Isaac Louria supérieur à toute la poésie d'ibn Ezra et d'ibn Gabirol.
