Mathématicien hongrois dont les deux parents étaient juifs ; sa mère était fille du philosophe Bernhard Alexander. Empêché d'entrer à l'université en 1939 par les lois antijuives, interné dans un camp de travail dont il s'évade, il achève son doctorat en 1947. Auteur de plus de 30 articles communs avec Paul Erdős (modèle de graphe aléatoire d'Erdős–Rényi) ; il fonde l'institut de mathématiques de Budapest qui porte aujourd'hui son nom (« entropie de Rényi »).
