Hungarian mathematician whose parents were both Jewish; his mother was the daughter of philosopher Bernhard Alexander. Prevented from entering university in 1939 by antisemitic laws, interned in a labor camp from which he escaped, he completed his doctorate in 1947. Author of more than 30 joint papers with Paul Erdős (model of the Erdős–Rényi random graph); he founded the Institute of Mathematics in Budapest that bears his name today (« Rényi entropy »).
