Joueur d'échecs, né à Hohenfeld-sur-le-Main, en Allemagne, vers 1766, mort à Londres le 16 novembre 1850. Habitué assidu du Café de la Régence à Paris, où il passe l'essentiel de sa vie, membre éminent de l'école française d'échecs sans compter parmi les tout premiers joueurs, il se distingue par la brillance de ses combinaisons et son talent pour la résolution de problèmes. Il publie l'« Encyclopédie des Échecs » (Paris, 1837) et la « Collection des Plus Beaux Problèmes d'Échecs » (Paris, 1846).
