Premier évêque anglican de Jérusalem, né de parents juifs à Schönlanke, dans le grand-duché de Posen, en mai 1799, mort à Belbeis, en Égypte, le 23 novembre 1845. Formé de façon strictement orthodoxe, il enseigne le Talmud dès seize ans, puis s'installe en Angleterre en 1820 comme précepteur privé. Converti au christianisme, il est baptisé le 22 juin 1825 à Plymouth, où il officiait comme hazan de la communauté hébraïque. Nommé en 1832 professeur d'hébreu au King's College de Londres, il est sacré en 1841 premier évêque de Jérusalem de l'Église unie d'Angleterre et d'Irlande.
