Prétendant au trône de Judée, un jeune Juif de Sidon qui se fait passer, vers 4 av. J.-C., pour Alexandre, fils d'Hérode et de Mariamne, prétendument épargné par les bourreaux chargés de l'exécuter. Sa ressemblance frappante avec le véritable Alexandre trompe même ceux qui l'avaient connu, et les communautés juives de Crète, de Milo et de Rome l'accueillent avec enthousiasme et financent son voyage jusqu'à Rome. Mais l'empereur Auguste, connaissant bien les traits d'Alexandre, perce l'imposture à la vue de ses mains calleuses ; le jeune homme avoue et est envoyé aux galères, tandis que l'instigateur du complot est exécuté.
