Born in Novogroudok, emigrated to the United States, Alexander Harkavy was one of the great lexicographers of Yiddish. His major work is the Yiddish-English-Hebrew Dictionary (1925, enlarged in 1928), a reference tool still in use, which helped generations of Eastern European immigrants.
