Born in Zamość in 1816, died in Saint Petersburg in 1893, he moved to Odessa around 1840, a center of the Haskalah. In 1860 he founded Ha-Melitz, the first Hebrew newspaper of the Russian Empire (weekly, then daily from 1886, transferred to Saint Petersburg in 1871), to which he added a Yiddish supplement, Kol Mevasser. He was a major figure in progressive Jewish press of his time; Leon Rabinowitz succeeded him as editor of Ha-Melitz in 1893.
