Éditeur et érudit français, né à Metz le 18 mars 1841, petit-fils de Gerson Lévy. Après des études au lycée de sa ville natale, il entre en 1862 à l'École normale supérieure de Paris, qu'il quitte en 1865 pour enseigner les mathématiques, puis reprend en 1869 l'entreprise d'édition de son père à Metz. Installé à Paris en 1872, il entre l'année suivante dans la maison Germer-Baillière, dont il devient le chef en 1883 ; il est fait chevalier de la Légion d'honneur en 1895.
