Philosophe et théologien allemand, le plus éminent du Moyen Âge et fondateur de la tendance scientifique au sein de l'ordre dominicain ; né à Lauingen, en Bavière, en 1193, mort à Cologne en 1280. Il participe à Paris, en 1248, à la conférence qui décide du brûlement du Talmud, ouvrage qu'il connaît pourtant par des auteurs juifs. Grand lecteur de la philosophie juive, il cite abondamment le médecin et philosophe Isaac Israeli l'Ancien et consacre une étude critique à la « Fons Vitæ » d'Avicebron (Salomon ibn Gabirol), dont il reconnaît l'originalité tout en la contestant vivement.
