Romancier, dramaturge, critique et acteur allemand, né à Breslau le 9 juillet 1862, sous le pseudonyme de Conrad Alberti (de son vrai nom Conrad Sittenfeld). D'abord acteur à Berlin, il se consacre ensuite entièrement à la littérature et devient l'un des pionniers du naturalisme en Allemagne, courant qui culminera avec Sudermann et Hauptmann. Il publie notamment le cycle romanesque « Der Kampf ums Dasein » (1888-94) et le drame « Brot! » (1888).
