Born in 1920 in Tunis to an Arabic-speaking Tunisian Jewish family from the Hara quarter, son of a saddle maker. Writer and sociologist of colonization, he published The Statue of Salt (1953) then The Portrait of the Colonized, preceded by The Portrait of the Colonizer (1957, preface by Jean-Paul Sartre). He settled in Paris and developed concepts on Jewishness, racism, and decolonization.
