Né en 1920 à Tunis dans une famille juive tunisienne arabophone du quartier de la Hara, fils d'un bourrelier. Écrivain et sociologue de la colonisation, il publie La Statue de sel (1953) puis le Portrait du colonisé, précédé du Portrait du colonisateur (1957, préface de Jean-Paul Sartre). Il s'installe à Paris et développe des concepts sur la judéité, le racisme et la décolonisation.
