Born in Corfu in a Sephardic Jewish family, he moved to Marseille at age five and then to Geneva for his law studies. A committed Zionist, he directed the Revue juive in 1925. He published Solal (1930), then his masterpiece Belle du Seigneur, crowned by the Grand Prix du roman of the Académie française in 1968.
