Né à Corfou dans une famille juive séfarade, il gagne Marseille à cinq ans puis Genève pour ses études de droit. Engagé sioniste, il dirige la Revue juive en 1925. Il publie Solal (1930), puis son chef-d'œuvre Belle du Seigneur, couronné par le Grand Prix du roman de l'Académie française en 1968.
