Born in Brooklyn in 1938, son of Harry and Belle (Simon) Lelchuk, he is an American novelist aware of his place in the Judeo-American literary tradition. Co-founder of Steerforth Press, he has taught at Brandeis, Amherst, and since 1985 at Dartmouth College. His early novels depict Jewish-American intellectual life.
