Alan Harvey Guth, né en 1947 à New Brunswick (New Jersey) dans une famille juive (parents Hyman et Elaine Guth). Professeur de physique au MIT (chaire Victor Weisskopf), il est le père de la théorie de l'inflation cosmique (1979-1981), pour laquelle il a reçu le prix Kavli 2014. Il a exposé la théorie pour le grand public dans un livre.
