Alan Harvey Guth, born in 1947 in New Brunswick (New Jersey) into a Jewish family (parents Hyman and Elaine Guth). Professor of physics at MIT (Victor Weisskopf chair), he is the father of the theory of cosmic inflation (1979-1981), for which he received the 2014 Kavli Prize. He presented the theory to the general public in a book.
