Né à Casablanca en 1947 dans une famille juive séfarade traditionnelle et aisée, présenté par sa notice biographique comme l'arrière-petit-fils d'un rabbin réputé du Maroc (non nommé). Anthropologue de formation, il fut délégué national du Parti communiste français à la culture et vice-président du conseil régional Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur chargé de la culture.
