Né en 1939 dans une famille juive d'origine alsacienne, républicaine et peu pratiquante (son père, inspecteur de la Banque de France, est tué au front en juin 1940). Physicien, il devient l'un des dirigeants de Mai 68 (avec Sauvageot et Cohn-Bendit) à la tête du SNESup, puis anime la Gauche prolétarienne (maoïste). Il fut ensuite inspecteur général de l'Éducation nationale.
