Né à Tunis dans une famille juive séfarade, émigré à Paris à 18 ans. Avec le compositeur Claude-Michel Schönberg, il est l'auteur des livrets et paroles de comédies musicales à succès mondial : La Révolution française (1973), Les Misérables (1980), Miss Saigon (1989), Martin Guerre (1996).
