Vizir turc et vice-roi d'Égypte sous Soliman le Magnifique (1520-1566), il reçoit cette charge en récompense de sa vaillance lors de la conquête de Rhodes en 1523. Déçu de ne pas devenir grand vizir, il tente de détacher l'Égypte de la Turquie ; démasqué par le maître de la Monnaie Abraham de Castro, il est capturé et décapité en mars 1524, après avoir fait peser une lourde rançon sur les Juifs du Caire, épisode commémoré depuis comme le Pourim du Caire.
