Médecin et journaliste né le 31 mars 1836 à Jankovácz, en Hongrie, fils d'un médecin galicien émigré, il fut éduqué à Budapest et à Vienne avant de beaucoup voyager en Europe, en Asie et en Afrique. Sa première œuvre littéraire, le roman « Antoinette », parut en 1854 ; sous le pseudonyme « Porzó », il publia à partir de 1865 des feuilletons pleins de verve, dirigea de 1870 à 1879 le « Nagyvilág », et fonda en 1871 l'hebdomadaire satirique « Borsszem Jankó », dont il resta rédacteur en chef jusqu'en 1900.
