Hébraïsant du XVIe siècle, juif d'origine espagnole émigré tôt en Allemagne où il se convertit au christianisme, il fut médecin de profession mais se distingua surtout comme professeur d'hébreu. Appelé en 1513 à la chaire d'hébreu de Heidelberg, il obtint en 1517, sur recommandation d'Érasme, une chaire au Collegium Trilingue de Louvain, poste qu'il perdit dès 1519 après avoir publiquement affirmé que saint Jérôme n'était pas exempt d'erreurs — propos qui lui valut l'hostilité de Latomus. Chassé de Wittenberg en 1521, où Luther l'avait pourtant accueilli à bras ouverts, le lieu et la date de sa mort restent incertains.
