Rabbin américain né à Lengsfeld, près d'Eisenach, le 9 janvier 1812 et mort à Chicago le 29 janvier 1892, formé en littérature biblique et rabbinique par Isaac Hess puis au collège talmudique de Francfort, il émigra en Amérique en 1854 et devint enseignant-prédicateur de la congrégation juive de Detroit, avant d'être appelé en 1861 à la Kehillath Anshe Ma'arabh de Chicago, où il resta jusqu'à sa mort. Homme modeste et conservateur mais ouvert à une réforme mesurée du culte, il publia en 1890 trois volumes de sermons en allemand, dont une sélection parut en traduction anglaise à Philadelphie en 1893 sous le titre « Sabbath Hours ».
