Acteur judéo-allemand né à Odessa le 1er janvier 1855, influencé par une troupe juive venue de Roumanie à Odessa en 1875, il résolut de se consacrer au théâtre et fit ses débuts en 1878 au théâtre de Kherson, s'imposant d'emblée comme un interprète habile des sentiments du ghetto russe. Lorsque le gouvernement russe interdit les pièces juives en 1883, il émigra à Londres, puis s'installa à New York en février 1888, où il devint l'un des acteurs majeurs de la scène juive.
