Musicologue autrichien né à Eibenschütz, en Moravie, le 1er novembre 1855 — son père, médecin, mourut en 1857 —, il étudia la musique à Vienne sous Bruckner et Desoff avant d'obtenir un doctorat en droit en 1878 puis en philosophie en 1880. Nommé chargé de cours de musicologie à l'université de Vienne en 1883, il fonda en 1884, avec Friedrich Chrysander et Philipp Spitta, la « Vierteljahresschrift für Musikwissenschaft », puis fut appelé en 1885 comme professeur ordinaire d'histoire et de théorie de la musique à l'université allemande de Prague, poste qu'il occupa ensuite à Vienne à partir de 1898. Depuis 1894, il dirige les « Denkmäler der Tonkunst für Österreich ».
