Avocat et collectionneur de manuscrits hébraïques né à Londres en 1861, fils du grand rabbin Nathan Adler, il voyagea abondamment en Orient, effectuant de 1888 à 1898 trois séjours en Égypte et en Palestine, puis, en 1892 et 1894, de l'Espagne au Maroc, avant de visiter l'Algérie et la Tunisie fin 1894-début 1895 ; ces voyages lui permirent de réunir l'une des plus grandes collections privées de manuscrits hébreux au monde. Il fut secrétaire honoraire de la Jewish Association for the Diffusion of Religious Knowledge et vice-président de la conférence internationale de Berlin sur la question russo-juive, en 1891.
