Rabbin et pédagogue allemand né en 1813 et mort à Worms en 1856, frère du rabbin Samuel Adler, il étudia à Bonn et à Giessen puis fut précepteur en Hongrie à partir de 1839. Élu rabbin de Worms en 1842, il renonça aussitôt à cette charge pour fonder une école privée de jeunes filles, et se distingua en 1845 comme réformateur radical aux côtés de Holdheim, Geiger et Einhorn. Arrêté lors du mouvement révolutionnaire de 1848 et emprisonné à la Tour de Fer de Mayence, il fut acquitté ; sa santé, trop atteinte pour qu'il accepte en 1854 le rabbinat du Temple Emanu-El de New York, causa sa mort l'hiver suivant.
