Autrice américaine d'une histoire des Juifs, née à Medfield, près de Boston, en 1755 ou 1756, et morte à Brookline (Massachusetts) le 15 novembre 1832, elle apprit les rudiments du grec, du latin et de l'hébreu auprès d'étudiants pensionnaires chez son père. Sa correspondance avec l'abbé Grégoire fut à l'origine de son « History of the Jews from the Destruction of Jerusalem to the Present Time » (Boston, 1812 ; Londres, 1818), traduite en allemand à Leipzig en 1819-20 — la première histoire des Juifs postbibliques publiée en Amérique. Elle publia aussi « A View of Religious Opinions » (1784) et « Evidences of Christianity » (1801).
