Bouffon à la cour de Pierre le Grand de Russie, dans la première moitié du XVIIIe siècle, il fut d'abord courtier à Hambourg avant d'émigrer en Russie, où il obtint une charge de bouffon ; d'allure cocasse, spirituel et polyglotte, il rencontra le tsar, selon Doran, à la cure d'eaux d'Alonaitz en 1719. Pierre appréciait ses discussions théologiques, parfois vives, et le récompensa en lui offrant l'île sablonneuse et inhabitée de Sammer, dans le golfe de Finlande ; il conserva sa charge de bouffon de cour sous l'impératrice Anne.
