Roi du royaume du Nord d'Israël (875-853 av. J.-C.), fils et successeur d'Omri, il défendit son pays contre le royaume araméen de Damas, remportant plusieurs victoires et obtenant en 855 av. J.-C. des privilèges commerciaux dans cette ville. Il fut le premier roi d'Israël à entrer en conflit avec l'Assyrie, s'alliant avec Damas en 854 av. J.-C. contre Salmanazar II à la bataille de Karkar, puis, l'année suivante (853 av. J.-C.), combattit de nouveau les Araméens à Ramoth de Galaad aux côtés de Josaphat, roi de Juda ; déguisé en simple soldat, il fut mortellement blessé par une flèche perdue et mourut à la tombée du jour.
