Troisième fils du roi David, né à Hébron d'une mère nommée Maaka, fille de Talmaï, roi de Guechour. Il vengea sa sœur Tamar, violée par leur demi-frère Amnon, en le faisant tuer lors d'un banquet, puis se réfugia trois ans chez son grand-père à Guechour avant d'être ramené à Jérusalem grâce à l'intervention de Joab. Devenu populaire par sa beauté, il finit par se révolter contre son père, entrer dans Jérusalem et s'emparer du harem royal en signe de prise de pouvoir.
