Considered one of the greatest Yiddish poets of the twentieth century and "the great poet of the Shoah". Member of the Yung-Vilne group, he was confined to the Vilna ghetto (1941–1945) where he wrote and participated in rescuing manuscripts and books threatened by the Nazis. A survivor, he founded and directed in Israel the literary journal Di Goldene Keyt.
