Considéré comme l'un des plus grands poètes yiddish du XXe siècle et « le grand poète de la Shoah ». Membre du groupe Yung-Vilne, il fut enfermé au ghetto de Vilna (1941–1945) où il écrivit et participa au sauvetage de manuscrits et livres menacés par les nazis. Rescapé, il fonda et dirigea en Israël la revue littéraire Di Goldene Keyt.
