Né à Starokostiantyniv en 1840, il découvre le théâtre à l'école rabbinique de Jitomir. En 1876 il fonde à Iași la première troupe professionnelle de théâtre en langue yiddish, dont il est le dramaturge, directeur, compositeur et scénographe. Auteur d'une quarantaine de pièces, il est considéré comme le père du théâtre juif moderne.
