According to the Jewish Encyclopedia, Abraham Gatigno was appointed ḥakham bashi (chief rabbi) of Salonika on January 10, 1875 and founded the first modern Jewish school in the city. He is the author of "Ẓel ha-Kesef" (Salonika, 1872).
