D'après la Jewish Encyclopedia, Abraham Gatigno fut nommé ḥakham bashi (grand rabbin) de Salonique le 10 janvier 1875 et fonda la première école juive moderne de la ville. Il est l'auteur de « Ẓel ha-Kesef » (Salonique, 1872).
