Philologue français célèbre du seizième siècle, qui aurait maîtrisé vingt langues. Converti au christianisme, il devint vers 1537 professeur d'hébreu à Avignon. En vieillissant, l'attachement à sa foi d'origine se réveilla en lui, et, ne pouvant dissimuler ses véritables sentiments, il fut accusé d'être secrètement juif ; il fut destitué de sa charge en 1593. Pour échapper à un sort pire, il s'enfuit à Venise, où il revint ouvertement au judaïsme.
