Born in Morocco, he immigrated to the Land of Israel before 1565. In Safed he joined the circle of Moïse Cordovero and became close to Elie de Vidas; Hayyim Vital reports teachings of the Ari that he received from him. Celebrated for his piety and his practice of tikkun hatzot (he walked through Safed at midnight to awaken the community to mourning for the Shekhina). He is credited with compiling the Zohar Hadash, a collection of texts from the Kabbalists of Safed.
