Né au Maroc, immigré en Terre d'Israël avant 1565. À Safed il rejoint le cercle de Moïse Cordovero et se lie à Elie de Vidas ; Hayyim Vital rapporte des enseignements de l'Ari qu'il tenait de lui. Célèbre pour sa piété et sa pratique du tikkun hatzot (il parcourait Safed à minuit pour réveiller la communauté au deuil de la Shekhina). On lui attribue la compilation du Zohar Hadash, réunion de textes des kabbalistes de Safed.
