Colonel français né à Thionville le 21 mars 1814, engagé volontaire à dix-huit ans, il participa au siège d'Anvers puis gravit les échelons jusqu'au grade de lieutenant en 1846. Il reçut la croix de la Légion d'honneur après les journées de juin 1848, fut promu capitaine en 1851, combattit pendant la guerre de Crimée puis, en 1859, pendant la guerre d'Italie, où il fut blessé à Magenta. Fait officier de la Légion d'honneur en 1864, il fut rappelé au service actif en 1870 et combattit à Champigny, avant de présider la congrégation de Versailles jusqu'en 1891.
