Auteur et notable communautaire anglais, mort le 31 mars 1863 à Liverpool, où il résida quarante ans et occupa diverses charges honorifiques dans la synagogue et les institutions juives de la ville. On lui doit l'introduction, dès 1827 à Liverpool, de la prédication régulière en langue vernaculaire dans les offices synagogaux, pratique qui s'étendit ensuite aux synagogues de province puis à Londres. Il traduisit aussi du français plusieurs ouvrages destinés à la jeunesse.
